Epson has developed a compact and lightweight spectroscopic camera that can be integrated into manufacturing lines. Epson will launch its first spectroscopic camera, capable of capturing light across the entire visible spectrum, in fiscal year 2020 ending March 2021.
Color differences may occur between products from different production batches in ordinary manufacturing processes. A spectroscopic camera can be used by manufacturers to perform the following inspections to control these differences to some extent and ensure product quality:

RGB cameras currently used in these inspections are not able to capture detailed color information and are not always able to distinguish subtle color differences. Therefore, most visual inspections relied on human color perception. However, color perception varies among individuals, and human error puts manufacturers at risk of shipping defective products. Time and cost constraints make color management a problem in many industries. Spectroscopic cameras are traditionally bulky and expensive, and those equipped with linear sensors may need to compose images after scanning, increasing time and cost.
Epson has developed an optimal solution for color management processes with a compact, lightweight spectroscopic camera that can be integrated into manufacturing lines, which can automate and quantify inspections and produce images without the time and composition issues. This spectroscopic camera will make it easier than ever for manufacturers to manage color in their manufacturing processes.
Features
About the same compactness and weight as an RGB camera. Can be installed in manufacturing lines. Integral field spectroscopy. Can focus on an area, measure colors and distinguish colors of a target object within the visible light range. Image processing functions needed on manufacturing lines can be used in conjunction with spectral imaging functions.
