Swimming in an ice hole at Epiphany is harmful to health, and this tradition has nothing to do with Orthodoxy. Priest Pavel Ostrovsky stated this.
“A couple of centuries ago there was an official warning from the Holy Synod of our church that swimming in an ice hole at Epiphany is harmful to health, and that this is a consequence of the pagan practice of telling fortunes at Christmastime,” the priest said on his Instagram page (a banned social network owned by Meta organization, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation). He also noted that all statements that swimming in the Epiphany ice hole is a way of cleansing the soul, forgiveness of sins and spiritual achievement can be attributed to insufficient awareness of the masses.
Ostrovsky explained that initially ice holes began to be made not for bathing in Epiphany water, but so that people might take the blessed water home, since there was no running water in the churches. Now that most churches have running water, blessed water is distributed on site.
During the celebration of Epiphany in various places around the world, including Russia, water is blessed. In 2024, Epiphany water will be available on January 18 and 19. URA.RU told you how to properly treat holy water and when you need to collect it.
