Manufacturers make a fortune by selling in-game skins and accessories.
With around 220 million monthly players, that counts Battle Royale Spiel Fortnite has now become one of the most popular video games ever. And even though the game is available for free, the manufacturers make a killing by selling in-game items. Among other things, players can buy so-called “skins”, which determine the playable character.
At the beginning of 2019 the skin from US DJ Marshmello (31) introduced the so-called “Icon” series. Players can buy skins from selected stars and fight their next battle as their favorite celebrity. A number of athletes, musicians and other public figures have now been available to purchase in the game, including nine-time Grammy winner Billie Eilish (22).
This is how you make money with a free game
In Battle Royale mode, the most popular game mode in Fortnite, you have to be the last man standing on an island with 99 other players. The shockingly high number of players is also largely due to the price – the game can be downloaded and played for free on all consoles.
Instead, the developers rely on revenue generated by selling playable characters and accessories. The game developer “Epic Games” makes billions in profits every year – just from in-game purchases.
Around 30 celebrities already in the game
Thanks to its massive player base combined with the booming skin business, Fortnite offers an attractive marketing option for various companies and artists. It is not always clear who pays whom in the course of a cooperation – but both parties usually benefit. Around 30 international celebrity skins have already been available for purchase, including: Singer Ariana Grande (30), rapper Eminem (51), singer Bruno Mars (38), footballer Neymar Jr. (32), Marco Reuss (34) and now also singer Billie Eilish.
With the release of the Billie Eilish skin, the manufacturers also want to promote the new game mode “Fortnite Festival”. This is a rhythm-based mode that is strongly reminiscent of “Guitar Hero”. In the third edition, the focus is mainly on Billie Eilish’s songs, while she dances around on a stage in the background. Unlike previous icon skins, Billie Eilish is not available in the regular shop. Instead, you have to use in-game currency to buy the “Festival Pass” for 1,800 V-Bucks, which is the equivalent of around 15 francs. TheWeeknd (34) and Lady Gaga (38) were previously the headliners of the Fortnite festival.
