News business Epic Games Store: the number of accounts revealed, Steam in danger?
It’s no secret that the rise of the Epic Games Store is meteoric Epic Games intends to let us know. Yesterday, the firm revealed the number of accounts created, which continues to grow, grow, grow…
Half a billion for the EGS
Yesterday, Epic Games delivered some interesting information : more than 500 million Epic Games Store accounts have been created. A symbolic milestone, but above all reached in an impressive period of time since the virtual store was launched in December 2018 only. A little over three years will have been necessary to cross the half-billion mark and to do this, Tim Sweeney’s firm will have released big tickets.
So of course, the platform has some renowned exclusives – we can cite Fortnite Where Rocket League – as well as fruitful associations with some major publishers, such as Ubisoft. What’s more, the company is extremely generous with at least one game given each week (when not several), on the sole condition of having an Epic Games Store account, the opening of which is completely free. For the month of December, the organization even goes so far as to give away one app per day. You have to believe that hard work pays off.
It’s half as much as Steam
Inevitably, the comparison with Steam is necessary and is done quite naturally. In 2019 alone, Valve said over a billion accounts had been createds; no later than January 2, the platform recorded a new record with a peak of 27.9 million players simultaneously. The previous record, however, dated from November 2021 only, with 27.4 million people.
Steam is ahead, certainly, and well beyond the number of registered accounts, it is that of active players that counts and that shows good health. To comparethe Epic Games Store recorded a peak of 13.2 million concurrent users in 2021.
Still, just because Steam is a step ahead doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be worried. Valve’s platform has had time to install and dominate the PC market, which has been present since 2003: quite the opposite of the Epic Games Store which is working hard to catch up with its competitor, already reaching half of its scores in just three years.
Truth be told, the EGS numbers shouldn’t stop there. Epic Games, determined to continue its efforts, will continue to deliver a free game per weekwhich should attract more and more people while the boat continues to be led by ultra-popular games (Fortniteto name only him). So certainly, opposite, there are behemoths like the recent Lost Ark which is a hit, but the showdown is already active and inevitable.
