Epic Games releases Unreal Engine 5, with new tools for real-time rendering and open worlds

MADRID, 6 Abr. (Portaltic/EP) –

Epic Games has launched the graphics engine Unreal Engine 5, which is now available to download and use for free, and incorporates features and technologies such as Lumen, Nanite and Temporal Super Resolution, all aimed at offering a hyper-realistic experience.

The launch of Unreal Engine 5 has been framed in The State of Unreal event organized by Epic itself this Tuesday. With its new graphics engine, the company aspires to “power both small and large teams” and enable the realization of “next-generation 3D content and experiences in real time” with greater “freedom, fidelity and flexibility” than before, as explained it’s a statement.

From Epic they remember that the functions included in Unreal Engine 5 have already been demonstrated in the development of titles such as Fortnite and The Matrix Awakensthe latter being seen as a technical demo of the potential of the motor.

Among the development groups and publishers currently working with Unreal Engine 5 for future projects are PlayStation, Ninja Theory, Devolver Digital, Tencent y The Coalitionthe studio in charge of the latest installments of Gears of War in addition to CD Projekt, which has recently signed an alliance with Epic for the creation of titles such as the new The Witcher.

Taking advantage of Epic’s announcement, Crystal Dynamics has confirmed on Twitter that the next title in the Tom Raider franchise It will be developed with the new graphics engine Unreal Engine 5.

REAL TIME RENDERING

Unreal Engine 5, which was released by Epic in 2021 in the early access phase, reached the preview phase just a few months ago and is now available with features including the next-generation real-time rendering.

Within this, Epic mentions four technologies: Lumen, Nanite, Virtual Shadow Maps (VSM) y Temporal Super Resolution (TSR). The first of these is a dynamic and global lighting solution that allows you to create more realistic scenarios in which “indirect light adapts on the fly to changes in direct light or geometry”.

In the case of Nanite, Epic describes it as “the new virtualized geometry system,” giving it the ability to “create games and experiences with an immense amount of geometric detail.”

To work in conjunction with Lumen and Nanite, Epic introduces Virtual Shadow Mapping (VSM), a technique that allows you to generate shadows with higher performance. “reasonable and controllable”.

The fourth and final technology included in next generation rendering is TSR, thanks to which games can use supersampling tools to reach higher resolutions.

OTHER FEATURES FOR THE OPEN WORLD

Epic has also detailed other features that Unreal Engine 5 brings with it. One of them is a new set of tools for create open worlds in a “faster, easier and more collaborative way for teams of all sizes”.

The company has also introduced tools to improve character animation such as the ability to recycle existing animations or adapt them for “fit the ‘gameplay’ conditions at runtime”.

Unreal Engine 5 also introduces a range of enhanced modeling and editing options that allow artists to “develop and refine assets” from the ground up. Unreal Editor. Epic points out that these tools are “especially useful” when working with large spaces, such as “those generated with photogrammetry”.

Epic also refers to an improvement in the UI editor and, by extension, in the workflows that they do in general “faster, easier and more enjoyable to use.”

MetaSounds is another of the novelties that Unreal Engine 5 incorporates, defined as a “high-performance system that offers complete control” in all aspects of rendered audio.

Ultimately, Epic retrieves the Path Tracer, a rendering mode already introduced in Unreal Engine 4.27, which in this new version offers “improvements in stability, performance and integrity” of the imagery, such as support for the shading of the eyes and hair of the characters represented .
