– Two EPFL doctoral students among the 2023 laureates
The Swiss National Science Foundation unveiled the winners of its annual photography competition on Tuesday.
Scientific images, used in a professional setting, can also turn out to be real photographic works. This is how, since 2017, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has been rewarding the most beautiful photos and videos from the country’s research laboratories. Among this year’s winners, announced on Tuesday, are two EPFL doctoral students.
The first, Rafael Barmak, won the “Places and Tools” category with his photo “Bees and microchips”, “documenting an electronic device developed to study bees”. The international jury was won over by this shot which took him “into a new biohybrid world where the natural meets the artificial”, indicates the press release from the FNS.
The second awarded EPFL doctoral student, Cyprien de Sepibus, who also works at the Geneva School of Landscape, Engineering and Architecture HES-SO, won in the “videos” category with “Vortex at the end of the wing. It shows “a visualization of the turbulence created around an airplane wing” which, according to the jury, “magically makes the invisible visible”, leading us “from the physical world into a vaporous flow of virtual appearance”.
“The competition presents a realistic, rich and varied vision of what research is today. Among the people awarded, half are young people doing a doctorate, half are women, and half have come to Switzerland from abroad. These figures clearly reflect the dynamism of the next generation of scientists and its diversity,” explains Matthias Egger, President of the National Research Council of the SNSF. This year, 435 photos and videos were submitted to the competition. The winners will see their works exhibited at the Biel Photographic Days, from May 5 to 28.
