EP PerMed: Advancing Personalized Medicine with European Union Partnership

The new EP PerMed partnership promoted by the European Union (EU) within the framework of the Horizon Europe Research Framework Program has begun to take its first steps this January. The Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) actively participates in this partnership and will invest 28 million euros over the next seven years, that is, it will finance one call per year, including three million for a first call on targets and biomarkers.

EP PerMed searches promote the development of personalized medicine facilitating advances in prevention, diagnosis and therapy that can improve the personalized clinical approach to different diseases. It has a total budget of regarding 375 million euros for the next seven years, provided in a co-financing model by the EU and more than 50 international partners, including the ISCIII.

The first call for EP PerMed for project financing, called ‘Identification and validation of targets for personalized medicine’, has just been released. On January 2 was the official opening, on the 12th the deadline for submitting pre-proposals to obtain funding for research projects began and, following a first review, on June 20 the final deadline for submitting final proposals ends.

The three million euros that the ISCIII is going to contribute to this first call can be received by research centers, hospitals, Health Research Institutes (IIS), groups from the Networked Biomedical Research Center (CIBER), foundations and universities.

Boost for precision medicine

The involvement of the ISCIII in EP PerMed consolidates its commitment to promoting precision medicine in Spain, in line with what is established in its 2021-2025 Strategic Plan.

“The launch of this European project on personalized medicine represents our present and future as a society. Its objective is to consolidate personalized medicine to continue improving people’s health while ensuring equity,” he explains. Daniel Ruiz, deputy director general of International Research Programs and Institutional Relations of the ISCIII. “EP PerMed represents a very important part of various initiatives linked to the construction of the European Health Union, which aims to promote a coordinated and joint response of the member countries to the research and application of biomedical and health advances. The common challenge is to guarantee that scientific knowledge has benefits for the economy and society,” he concludes.
