The world of little Éowyn, four years old, and her parents collapsed recently when they received the terrible diagnosis. In the columns of Nieuwsblad, her mother Heavenly, aged 31, explained how she and her husband learned that their daughter was suffering from a serious illness.

Éowyn lives with her parents in Zuienkerke, Flanders. One day, her mother was alerted by a severe outbreak of fever in her daughter. She also felt a little weak. “We first thought it was a stomach flu,” Heavenly tells our colleagues. “My mother also had a stomach flu, so it was possible. However, his symptoms persisted and it was not normal,” she adds. “I knew something was wrong. And my intuition turned out to be right,” says the mother.

Heavenly therefore decided to go to the pediatrician with Éowyn. “A few hours following the blood test, we received the diagnosis: acute leukemia,” explains the mother. News that shakes the whole family. “Our world was completely turned upside down from that moment on,” says Heavenly. Éowyn was immediately transferred to Ghent University Hospital, where she will have to go back and forth for the weeks, months or even possibly years to come.

“The doctors said the treatment might last up to two years,” explains the 30-year-old. “In the meantime, she has already had chemotherapy and she is sick from it. It’s hard to explain to your four-year-old daughter what exactly she has,” Heavenly adds. Little Éowyn understands that she is ill, “but she is far from understanding everything,” says her mother. Fortunately, the family claims to be very well looked following by doctors.

And in all this, there is also Éowyn’s little brother, who should not be put aside. “At home we have another six-year-old son, who also needs our attention. His world was also completely turned upside down,” confides Heavenly. Very close to his sister, he will no longer be able to play with her for a long time.

The family can also count on the school to support them. “She will not be allowed to go to school completely, but the school visits her for one hour a week and we are very grateful,” says the mother.

Heavenly and her husband can also count on their friends, who have launched a collection and are selling pastries to raise money to finance Éowyn’s treatment. “We are really surprised by the extent of the solidarity. Everyone sympathizes with us and we are very grateful. We didn’t expect this. This touches us enormously,” Heavenly confides.
