EODY: 29 deaths from coronavirus, 9 intubated – All data

The deaths of patients infected with coronavirus decreased to 29 from 35 that were in the previous indication of the Weekly Report of the Epidemiological Surveillance of Respiratory Infections, as announced on Thursday, August 22 by the EODY.

According to the EODY information, between August 12 and August 18, 9 people are hospitalized with intubation, as they were infected with the coronavirus. Hospital admissions show a slight decrease, amounting to 771.

No new flu deaths were recorded.

In summary week 33/2024:

Influenza-like illness – ILI (regardless of pathogen)

✓ The number of influenza cases per 1,000 visits remains low.

Severe Acute Respiratory Infection – SARI (regardless of pathogen)

✓ The number of SARI cases per 1,000 visits remains low.

SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection

✓ The summer surge in virus activity began earlier this year than in the summer of 2023 and so far appears to be characterized by a higher number of hospital admissions, but a lower number of intubations and deaths than last year.

✓ The positivity in all tested samples showed an increase compared to the previous week.

✓ 771 new imports were recorded, showing a slight decrease compared to the previous week. The average weekly number of new admissions over the previous four weeks was 840.

✓ The number of new intubations was nine. The average weekly number of new intubations over the previous four weeks was 12.

✓ The number of patients with COVID-19 infection who are hospitalized with intubation is 27.

✓ The number of deaths was 29. The average weekly number of deaths in the previous four weeks was 42.

✓ Since late spring, the BA.2.86 strain carrying at least one of the F456L and R346T mutations has dominated detections. It is noted that this category of mutant strains has not been associated with an increased risk of severe disease.

✓ From the monitoring of the viral load in municipal wastewater, an earlier start of the summer upward trend is evident, with the levels moving so far overall lower compared to last year’s summer wave. The weekly data showed a decrease in the circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in eight of the ten areas tested, while an increase was recorded in two.

✓ It is recommended for vulnerable population groups (elderly and people with underlying diseases) to scrupulously observe the preventive measures against respiratory infections and seek medical advice in time for symptoms, in order to provide timely treatment. At the same time, it is recommended to the general population, in the presence of respiratory infection symptoms, to limit contacts with people belonging to vulnerable groups.

Influenza virus

✓ Influenza positivity as assessed by surveillance networks in the community (Sentinel PHY surveillance network) and in the hospital setting (SARI surveillance network), remains at very low levels, with detection of only sporadic positive samples.

✓ No new serious case with hospitalization in ICU, nor new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza was recorded.

✓ From week 40/2023 to week 33/2024, 149 people with laboratory-confirmed influenza were hospitalized in ICU and 71 deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza were recorded.

✓ From week 40/2023 to week 33/2024, 1,067 influenza strains have been typed (derived from community Sentinel samples, from SARI surveillance samples and from hospital samples outside surveillance networks), of which 559 (52%) were type A and 508 (48%) type B. From week 10 onwards there is a prevalence of type B, both in the community (Sentinel PHC surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).

Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV

✓ No positive samples were found both in the community (PHC Sentinel surveillance network) and in hospitals (SARI surveillance network).
