Biagio Venditti he is 17 years old. He is in his fourth year at Cambridge Classical High School. He has the lightheartedness of a young man who dreams of being an actor even as an adult and of working, maybe one day, with Ferzan Özpetek and Paola Cortellesi. Diego Abatantuono, with whom he acted in the film The last week of Septemberthe first work by Gianni De Blasi, already in theaters with Medusa, defined him as a natural talent, “I believe in my potential, but I keep my feet on the ground”, the actor tells us.
In the film he plays Mattia, a teenager who loses his parents in a car accident and is forced to take a trip with his grandfather Pietro, a man with whom he has always had a superficial relationship. But this tragedy will rekindle a bond between the two. We will also see Venditti in the film In the best families by Paolo Costella, with Anna Foglietta and Giuseppe Battiston, the story of a couple who loved each other and then lost each other after the death of their first child, but who still feel the need to find each other.
Biagio, what is there of you in Mattia?
I put my spontaneity into the character. In this, he and I are similar. The tragedy that Mattia lives affects him. But he is also a teenager who will have the opportunity to rediscover himself, he will let his emotions out and use them in this period of growth, despite the pain he feels. He turns out to be a brave boy and also quite enterprising, who wants to look for life in things.
This is a film about rebirth..
Mattia lives it completely. At first he feels abandoned by life, but by taking this trip with his grandfather, he also discovers new things about himself, as well as seeing better what is around him.
Abatantuono said you are a natural talent.
Diego’s words fill me with joy. Little by little I’m discovering my potential, I believe in what I can do, I want to continue on this path, but I still keep my feet on the ground. I didn’t have a formal education in acting. The set was the best school for me, even in life.
When and how did you approachacting?
Since I was 4 years old, I have been dancing. Locked in my bedroom since I was little, I would take my parents’ cell phone and film myself as if there was an audience in front of me. I had something inside, a real passion, and my family saw it. I did my first commercials at 7 years old, I took part in some fictions like Don Matteo e One step away from heaven. At 13 I made my debut as one of the protagonists of the Netflix series Di4riwhich for me was a great school, even in dealing with young audiences.
Then came the cinema.
I shot De Blasi’s film and it was a great experience. Being on set, understanding the mechanisms of the cinematographic machine. Working with Diego was also incredible. His irony made me want to shoot lighter films.
We will see you in the movie soon too In the best families by Paolo Costella.
That’s also dramatic. The protagonists are Anna Foglietta and Giuseppe Battison. Paolo is a director who is very attentive to details and to what he wanted from us. We are waiting to know when the film will be released.
Who would you like to work with?
I have always been fascinated by Ferzan Özpetek, the way he shoots and tells stories. I have always watched his films with my mother. Paola Cortellesi is also an actress, and now a director, that I have followed since I was little. I like to dream big.
So, your future will be acting?
Being an actor is a wonderful job. It makes you feel like you are in heaven, but at any moment all your security can disappear. Acting is my passion today and I want to do this when I grow up. In the meantime I have to finish high school, I would also like to enroll in university, in the faculty of psychology, which can be useful as studies also to get in touch more with the characters I play. If I hadn’t decided to become an actor, I would have studied law.
As you said, being an actor is not easy. There are also many young people of your generation who dream of this job.
That’s how it is. It’s a job made of victories and defeats, like life. But all of this is emotion and everything spurs you to move forward. I take the positive side of what comes and think about my path, in the meantime trying to reconcile set and school.
