Local Brazilian authorities have halted construction work on one of the properties of Brazilian football star Neymar in Rio de Janeiro state, due to environmental violations that might lead to a fine of more than $1 million.
The project was carried out “without an environmental permit” in a luxury property owned by the French star Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazilian national team in Aero Rural, in Mangaratiba, according to the city council, which is located regarding 130 kilometers from Rio, in a statement.
Local authorities discovered “various environmental irregularities” through complaints posted on social media, including diverting a watercourse, unauthorized extraction of water from a river, and extraction of water to supply an artificial lake.
The statement said that the local authorities also discovered unauthorized excavation and removal of dirt, stones and rocks, as well as the use of beach sand without an environmental permit.
And the city council announced that “the next step will be to assess the violations found and impose a fine of no less than five million riyals (regarding 950,000 euros), according to estimates, and taking into account the damage caused to the environment.”
The father of the Saint-Germain striker, Neymar da Silva Santos, was present at the property during the arrival of the authorities to conduct the “inspection”.
In a video released by the Mangartiba Municipal Council, Neymar’s father can be seen arguing the officials’ orders.
Neymar bought the property in 2016, which, according to local media, is located on an area of ten thousand square meters of land, and includes a helipad, a spa, a “sauna”, a massage room, a gym and dining areas.
Neymar is currently recovering from surgery on the right ankle that he underwent in Doha in March, knowing that he has been out of action since February, and doubts remain regarding his future in the ranks of Saint-Germain.
