Initially it didn’t look so bad that the Greens would find a majority in today’s local council meeting with their push for an environmental ticket for Upper Austria. It is all the more disappointing that things turned out differently, said Michael Svoboda, finance spokesman for the Linz Green Party, who did not draw a positive conclusion following the vote. “The fact that the opportunity to make the switch attractive to even more people through this annual pass for the state is not being used is a decision once morest a more attractive public transport offer and climate protection,” he criticizes.
In detail, the proposal stipulated that with the said annual ticket as a supplement to the tried and tested Linz environmental ticket for 285 euros, everyone in Linz might have traveled on all public transport throughout the state for 365 euros per year. More than 17,600 citizens currently have this discounted annual pass. “But the paths of Linzers often don’t stop at the city limits. Therefore, adding an environmental ticket for Upper Austria for 365 euros per year to the existing offer would have been the next logical step, but we cannot take it due to today’s decision by the local council,” said Svoboda.
He cannot understand that the costs were too high for the SPÖ in particular: “In contrast to expenditure on Stone Age highway projects, these are investments in the future that accelerate the transport transition and contribute to climate protection.”
