A Apple used much of its special September event to share with the world some of its main advances when it comes to sustainabilityas its first products 100% neutral in carbon emissions. An environmental organization highlighted by Apple in the past, however, was quick to contest the Cupertino giant’s ambitious statements.
According to Inside Climate Newso Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE) — Chinese environmental non-profit organization — said in a recent report that the company led by Tim Cook did not provide sufficient details to support its statements. The IPE also accused her of committing “climate-washing”which is when a company uses marketing strategies to create a pro-environment image.
Apple, it is worth noting, even called IPE a “leading environmental research organization” in one of its most recent environmental reports [PDF], referring to the year 2022. This year, the organization claims to have received a smaller amount of information regarding greenhouse gas emissions from Apple suppliers. Apparently, the company no longer requires its partners to provide this type of data publicly in 2023.
We believe there is a need for full disclosure and explanation of how Apple achieves carbon neutrality for its products, given the increased carbon emissions of some of its suppliers.
Also according to the IPE, Apple may be reallocating renewable energy certificates acquired for products such as the iPhone to other devices, such as the Apple Watch. In this way, by allocating a greater number of certificates to one device than to another, the company might claim that it is “carbon neutral” — considering that Apple watches have much leaner production than its smartphones.
According to the organization, if this really is the case, Apple’s statements lose some of their strength, as this leaves room for us to wonder whether the company has really made significant advances in its production line in terms of sustainability or whether it is all regarding just a carefully calculated mathematical game.
Apple, in turn, issued a statement in response to the IPE insisting that it does not reallocate renewable energy certificates from iPhones to other products and that the iPhone 15 Pro production chain emits 28% less greenhouse gases compared to 2015. This milestone, according to her, would have been driven by her investment in clean energy.
IPE director Ma Jun commented that only 30 Apple suppliers shared data on greenhouse gas emissions in their facilities, compared to 100 in previous years. This curious change, he highlighted, coincides with the American giant’s achievements in sustainability, suggesting a supposed connection.
