Environmental monitoring in Ybytyruzú Managed Resources Reserve

Asuncion, IP Agency.- Soil samples were taken within the protected wilderness areas of the Ybytyruzú Managed Resource Reserve, with the aim of measuring the percentage of total carbon capture in the soil.

Technicians from the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (Mades) in collaboration with park rangers carry out this work, whose samples are analyzed in the institution’s laboratory to determine not only carbon capture, but also total nitrogen in the soil and detritus, leaf litter, humidity and soil density in the dry season.

The results of these studies are crucial to understanding the behavior of soil and its capacity as a carbon dioxide (CO2) sink, capturing this gas from the atmosphere and storing it naturally in the soil.

These tasks are carried out in two periods: the wet season and the dry season. The objective of the survey of these samples is to obtain precise data that value these areas as important carbon storage deposits, thus contributing to the mitigation of climate change, reported Mades.
