“Lebanese Debate”
Environmental massacres and tree cutting are constantly repeated without any deterrence, which threatens forest and green spaces in Lebanon, which has long been famous for the nickname “Green Lebanon”, which raises question marks regarding the attempt to drop this title from it with efforts from certain parties. Otherwise, what is the justification for the silence applied by officials and not to move the judiciary to hold the perpetrators accountable.
In this context, the Land Association in Lebanon revealed a new environmental massacre in the area of Deir Saint Maroun in Annaya, Jbeil district, and placed the complaint on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Hajj Hassan, and called on him to open an investigation into the massacre committed and uncover the perpetrators in order to punish them severely.
The head of the association, Paul Abi Rashed, confirmed that he “contacted with an environmental association in the Jbeil region, to verify this massacre, but until now we have not received any news regarding it, to find out what is happening in the region.”
In an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”, Abi Rashid confirmed, “It has been confirmed that the massacre is regarding 900 meters away from the Annaya Monastery, but until this moment we do not know who this land belongs to.”
And he stressed that “the association acted immediately upon learning of this massacre, and asked all concerned to investigate the matter, but what was remarkable was the immediate intervention of the Ministry of Environment to find out the circumstances of what is happening in the region, and it seems that it is interested in what is going on.”
Abi Rashed was surprised by the lack of “the response of the Ministry of Agriculture until now, as it is directly involved in this massacre, due to the cutting of trees, which leads to the desertification of Annaya, so he appealed to those concerned to intervene immediately, under the hashtag # Save_Lebanon’s Forests.”
