(CNN) About 1,500 demonstrators who blocked the highway were arrested in The Hague, Netherlands on the 27th.
Hundreds of police officers were dispatched to the scene to maintain security, police said in a statement.
Police said the demonstrators initially tried to block the road under the overpass, but riot police prevented them from doing so and they entered the highway. Police reportedly repeatedly asked him to leave in person following he started protesting in front of the cordon.

Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported that Dutch actress Caris van Houten was also arrested following being hit by a water cannon.
Police said 1,539 people had been arrested for violating demonstration laws, but no criminal charges were planned. Another 40 people were arrested on criminal charges, including sabotage and vandalism.
