The Emirates Council for Environmental and Municipal Action, chaired by Her Excellency Maryam bint Mohammed Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, discussed in its first meeting the directions and requirements of the council’s future work, developments in the preparation of the draft national strategy for integrated waste management, and waste transformation projects at the state level.
The meeting, hosted by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, at its headquarters in Dubai, represents the first meeting of the members of the Council following the adoption by the Council of Ministers headed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, last May, the decision to establish the Council.
Her Excellency Maryam bint Mohammed Al Muhairi said: “Achieving the goal of quality of life in line with the goals of the UAE Vision 2071 depends on a set of main pillars, the most important of which is building a sustainable society. Therefore, the Ministry will work in cooperation with members of the Emirates Council for Environmental and Municipal Action to complete the achievements of the joint committees since 2009, to ensure the adoption of all criteria to achieve sustainable development.
She added: “The council will work during the coming period to propose the general foundations for strengthening joint work in the field of environment and related municipal services. Proposing regulations, legislation and policies to ensure more effective participation of the private sector in related projects. And work on integrative initiatives and projects related to the environmental and municipal field. Enhancing and developing scientific studies and research in related fields.
The council approved the short-term (six-month) action plan, which included the implementation of the national strategy for integrated waste management, and the launch of a set of transformational future projects, which support the adoption of circular economy standards, and others.
The council reviewed a proposed three-year medium-term action plan in the areas of joint work between all relevant authorities in the public and private sectors, enhancing the quality of life, the most important initiatives and projects related to the environmental and municipal sectors, and governance and empowerment mechanisms.
Council members discussed a set of transformational future projects in the areas of environment and municipality.
Promote joint action
During the meeting, the council discussed the achievements of the joint committees since 2009, and the Emirates Council for Climate Change and Environment since its establishment in 2016, at the level of municipal and environmental work, and the nature of the tasks of the Emirates Council for Environmental and Municipal Action, which include promoting joint work in the field of environment and related municipal services at the level The state between all components and groups of society, strengthening the legislative and legal structure to ensure more effective participation of the private sector, promoting and developing scientific studies and research, and discussing the requirements and directions for future work in line with the directions of the state and the directives of its wise leadership.
