By the end of the year, all waste producers in France (communities and administrations, households, professionals, etc.) will have to carry out sorting at source. In other words, having a compost will be mandatory. This provision was included in 2020 in the anti-waste law. We explain how it works.
What setup?
The public service site specifies that the implementation of this obligation “rests on the local authorities”. These will have to “offer solutions allowing you to carry out this sorting at the source, at home”. This may involve the provision of individual or collective composters, individual bins or collective containers for specific collection in dumpsters, as is already the case for glass, for example.
Which waste concerned?
This is biodegradable waste, that is to say waste that can decompose thanks to other living organisms. Today, they represent a third of the contents of the residual trash of the French, indicates the Ministry of Ecology.
The waste concerned is the remains of vegetables and fruit, tea bags without staples, faded flowers, leaves, but also coffee grounds, shells of dried fruits….
What penalty in case of absence of compost?
The text of the law does not provide for a sanction in the event of the absence of compost at one’s home.
