Environment Agency Abu Dhabi: Achievements, Initiatives, and Sustainability Efforts

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, praised the great support and attention that the Authority receives from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, which enabled it to achieve impressive results. Great achievements were made during the Year of Sustainability, and helped it address important environmental issues locally and globally, and implement its strategic initiatives and projects to continue its journey towards achieving its vision, mission and goals of preserving the environment and ensuring the sustainability of its natural resources and biological diversity, to ensure a healthy environment for all.

This came while His Highness chaired the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, which was held at the Nakheel Palace, in the presence of Mohammed Ahmed Al Bowardi, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, Minister of State for Defense Affairs, and Maryam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Al Muhairi, Head of the Office of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. International Affairs at the Presidential Office, Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Head of the Department of Community Development, Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Managing Director of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, Ahmed Matar Al Dhaheri, Head of the Office of His Highness the Ruler’s Representative in the Al Dhafra Region, and Dr. Sheikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised the important role played by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi in the “COP28” Conference of the Parties, which was hosted by the UAE at the end of 2023, noting its success in confirming its presence in many important initiatives to preserve natural habitats and protect the environment. Through its participation in many events, it highlights its projects and programs that confirm its commitment to working to confront the repercussions of climate change, and its implementation of the climate change strategy for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and achieving the goals of the Strategic Initiative for Climate Neutrality 2050, in addition to developing its local and global partnerships, by signing during the conference 6 of the Out of 18 agreements signed during 2023 in the field of environmental protection and scientific research.

His Highness was briefed on the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi’s preparations for the UAE to host the 12th session of the World Conference on Environmental Education from January 28 to February 2, 2024 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (ADNEC). 69 countries from all over the world participate in the conference, and it is held under the slogan “Communicating to Build Tomorrow.” It is considered one of the most important global events that brings together environmental education experts from all over the world, and represents a transformative movement in environmental education for a more sustainable future.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan praised the results achieved in 50 annual key performance indicators during the year 2023, which focused on various environmental sectors, which include waste, marine water quality, air quality, soil quality, biodiversity, groundwater and fishing. Sustainable, which contributed to the Authority obtaining 17 awards at the local and international levels in 2023. The meeting discussed the performance of the economic projects currently being implemented by the Authority, including the establishment of the Center for Plant Genetic Resources, the establishment of sea cages for fish farming on Dalma Island, and the Seed Conservation Center project in the Al Dhafra region, the first of its kind in the region.
His Highness was briefed on the achievements achieved by the marine research ship “Jiwon”, including its receipt of the Future Readiness Mark Award from the Government Development and Future Office. Since its launch, the ship has traveled 30,000 kilometers during 4,000 operational hours, and collected 2,900 samples. The total number of visitors reached 15,000.
During the year 2023, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi succeeded in avoiding the use of 245 million plastic bags since the start of the ban in June 2022, which represents up to 95% of the number of plastic bags consumed before the ban. As part of the “Together towards Zero” campaign, the Authority launched a challenge to government agencies to reduce the use of single-use plastic materials, and launched the bottle recovery machines initiative, during which it collected 1,000 tons of plastic bottles, and installed more than 70 bottle recovery machines and 26 smart containers in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. .

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan was briefed on the project to establish the “Network for Monitoring Annoying Odors in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,” which enables the Authority to monitor air pollution and annoying odors, and follow up on the activities that cause them throughout the emirate to reduce them. The project contributes to identifying the current reality and developing an action plan to control these odors in Abu Dhabi in cooperation with the relevant authorities. During 2023, the Authority installed two mobile stations and 10 sensors to monitor annoying odors, and will install 40 additional devices during 2024.

The meeting discussed the Authority’s achievements in the field of environmental awareness, as the Authority launched the “Naha” platform, which is an interactive digital platform that enhances efforts to participate in environmental protection, and focuses on society and youth. While the number of users of the “Green e-Learning” platform reached 882 users, noting that this platform includes 27 educational content, and is the first e-learning tool dedicated to environmental topics in the Middle East. The Authority’s efforts contributed to increasing the number of schools participating in the Sustainable Schools Initiative, rising from 84 schools in 2022 to 460 schools in 2023, while the number of universities participating in the Sustainable Universities Initiative reached 28 universities.
