At the end of April Apple launched the Self Service Repair program, in which users of the company’s devices can repair them themselves. The program currently covers the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone SE 3rd generation, but may be expanded in the future. Now it has become known what exactly is included in the repair kit provided to users of Apple devices under the said program.
Despite the fact that Self Service Repair was launched a few days ago, the program has already has been criticized by users, because in some cases, self-repair is more expensive than an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Users also have questions regarding the need to open a deposit of $1,000 to rent tools that will be required to replace the display or battery. Apple will take this money for itself if the user returns the tools in an unsatisfactory form or is late on deadlines.
As part of the Self Service Repair program, enthusiasts ordered a battery for the iPhone 13 Pro from Apple, as well as a tool kit, the rental of which cost $49 (in addition to the deposit). The instruments were delivered in two cases with a total weight of regarding 35 kg within two days. And here you can see why Apple asks for so much a considerable deposit.
The first case contains the heater needed to loosen the adhesive holding the display. In addition to the heating device, the case contains a power cable and a tray for placing an iPhone. The user first needs to fix the smartphone in the tray, and then place it in the device for heating.
The heating of the smartphone takes place within a precisely adjusted period of time strictly to the set temperature, which allows the glue to loosen enough to remove the display. After heating, the display can be detached using a suction cup. When you have finished peeling off the display, you can use the supplied adhesive removal tool.
The second case is not only more massive than the first, it turned out to be much more items. Here I found a user manual explaining what each tool in the kit is for. When installing a new screen or battery, the user must place the iPhone in the tray and then insert it into the press. Of course, users can purchase iPhone DIY repair tools, but they cost hundreds of dollars. For most ordinary users, the possibility of renting a repair kit looks more attractive.
