Through a Zoom video call with Skip Intro from El Comercio, Martha Isabel Bolaños, the Colombian actress who plays the character, remembers with nostalgia, a smile and in silence the moment of recording that scene. Additionally, she talks regarding her absence in the new Prime Video series, “Ugly Betty,” the sequel to the original soap opera.

Jenny, the character of the interested and manipulative lover, whom many women hated following 1999, represented an important leap in Bolaños’ artistic career. However, for years, the actress lived with the label “Pupuchurra”, a word that she herself invented. Later, people resented her desire to be called by her own name, Martha. “I was baptized,” she says. Even so, she is grateful for the opportunity that Fernando Gaitán, writer of the Colombian soap opera, gave her when he included her in the cast.

I was with Fernando Gaitán at that time, and he told me: ‘you achieved this, because your character was only for four episodes,’ the Colombian actress revealed.

“I always play the character of the flirtatious and sensual one, because as long as I continue to look good (she touches her face), since I have very Latin features, the casting directors go for the fixed one when they want a lover, a Latin woman or a femme fatale So, I am pigeonholed, but, personally, I am a spiritual woman and I am interested in the awakening of consciousness,” says Bolaños, also an actress in numerous soap operas, such as “Hasta que la plata nos separe” (2006), “Doña Bárbara ” (2008), “Without breasts there is no paradise” (2008-2009), and other current productions where he had leading roles, such as “Amparo Arrebato” (2020) and “Los García” (2022).

Above all, the Cali actress is a spiritual and sensitive woman, who accepts new challenges with “happiness.” At just turned 50 in December 2023, she has full energy and “the dream of traveling around the world” offering shows and talking regarding her personal experiences. For now, she tries to preserve her stay in Cali, even though new projects appear in Bogotá, such as “Master Chef Colombia”, which force her to take a plane back.

What is known regarding “Ugly Betty” on Prime Video?

When he has the opportunity, Bolaños meets his colleagues from “Yo soy Betty, la fea” and also maintains communication with them in a WhatsApp chat that bears the name of the soap opera. “We’re always going to be the ‘Betty’ actors, until we’re old,” he jokes. On one of the last times they met, Bolaños visited the filming set of “Betty, la fea”, a co-production of RCN Televisión and Prime Video, since she was participating in the cooking reality show, also filmed in the channel’s studios.

“I can’t say anything, but the series is going to be hilarious, because everyone comes with crazy stories regarding what has happened to them following 24 years. It’s going to be great. One of ‘the barracks’ became gay and the other joined Only Fans, the other… I mean, very good stories. So, it’s going to be cool. (Adapted to the times, you say?). I don’t know, I guess. “I know a few things from what they have told me, much more,” said the actress.

The new streaming series is the sequel to “Yo soy Betty, la fea” and the spin-off that followed it, “Ecomoda”. The latter is a version that lasted only three months on the air due to lack of audience and where Bolaños participated in the role of “La pupuchurra”. The actress’s manager had already told her that she would not be in the cast. “I accepted it and said OK,” she said. “But, a long time ago, (Fernando) made me another promise, which the producers of that second part are ignoring. He promised me that I would always be in his projects. “So, they are going to pull their legs for not having complied (with calling me).”

The reason for the absence of Bolaños in the Prime Video cast, according to the actress, is the lack of Paula Peña’s character, Sofía from “el cuartel de las feas”, in the story. What this means is that the actress’s residence in Brazil might complicate the production in terms of travel costs and stay in a hotel in Colombia. “I still say, what a lack of creativity! Because Jenny was a dress model and, since all the characters return years later, with new stories, she might have arrived more empowered, who knows. Or she took someone else’s husband, I don’t know. It seems to me that my character will be greatly missed, although I always feel that everything happens for a reason,” says Bolaños.

Her role in “Yo soy Betty, la fea” earned Martha Isabel Bolaños the TVyNovelas Award for the Best New Actress category in 2001. The character gave the actress international fame. Even Michael Jackson found out regarding her existence, when the Colombian was enjoying dinner at a restaurant in Chicago, where she lived for a time to study English.

Chris Tucker was having dinner with Michael Jackson at a Miami hotel restaurant. The actor from “An Explosive Couple” and “Rush Hour” was wondering why the Latin waiters approached the actress’s table to ask for a photo, so he consulted one of them regarding the reason. Then, they told her that she was a “very famous” woman in Colombia. That’s when Tucker approached Bolaños, greeted her in English, and then returned to her place. About 20 minutes later, he returned and proposed that she go up to the suite of the king of pop, Michael Jackson, of whom he was a trusted friend and knew that he was staying at the hotel.

“’I told him regarding you and he wants to meet you. Do you want to go?’, he told me she. And I said: ‘obviously yes’!” says the actress. Tucker’s game, according to Bolaños, was part of the flirtation that she was initiating and that, hours later, would end in him requesting a kiss on her mouth, which was rejected by her. Through the Zoom video call, the actress clarified that she was in a relationship with another person at that time. She was very in love with her, so she preferred to offer her friendship to the Hollywood actor, and they have been friends since then.

“Before, there were no cell phones or cameras. For me, it was unthinkable to ask for a photo of Michael Jackson. If you understand me? They were going to take me to his suite, to his privacy. It would be fifth to ask for a photo. So, I have no proof that that happened. But I was with him in his suite. I remember that he invited me to Neverland,” says Bolaños, very smiling. Credible or incredible? If it were ‘La pupuchurra’, that opportunity would not have passed him by.
