The president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), Mohammed Ben Sulayen, assured this Tuesday that “measures” are being taken to avoid “incidents” such as the massive invasion of the track at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix or the presence of guests on the edge of the starting grid during the formation lap in Spain.

The Emirati leader of the FIA, which is holding its 2023 World Conference and its Extraordinary General Assembly in Córdoba, affirmed that they hope to receive by the end of this month the report requested by the stewards from the promoters of the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, held in March, which includes a plan that proposes solutions to the “concerns” in terms of “security and protection” that have arisen as a result of said incident.

In relation to what happened at the beginning of June at the Spanish Grand Prix, when guests remained on the edge of the grid in the formation lap with the consequent crowding of people in that area, Ben Sulayen highlighted that “the priority of the FIA ” is “to protect the health and well-being of everyone on the grid: guests, officials and teams”.

“We must learn from this incident. Stefano Domenicali – Formula 1’s chief executive – has assured the FIA ​​that measures are being taken to ensure that it does not happen once more,” he stressed.

The FIA ​​president considered that, due to his “recent experiences”, this “is not only a problem in Formula 1, but also in Formula E and the World Endurance Championship and other categories”, with “too many people in the grill at some events”.

“I have no doubt that in all cases the promoter will adhere to the FIA ​​requirements regarding safety and security. It is the duty of the FIA ​​to ensure a safe environment for all. Safety in motor sport is the main priority of the Federation”, he stressed.

As far as Formula One is concerned, the world council has ratified several improvements to the Power Unit Regulations 2016 and has approved Bosch and Bender GMBH & CO.KG as sole suppliers for the knock sensor and insulation monitoring device. , respectively, from 2026 to 2030.

It also approved the calendar for the 2024 Formula E season, which will begin in Mexico on January 13, 2024 and will continue in Diriyah (Saudi Arabia) on the 26-27 of that month, in two venues to be confirmed (February 10 and 20). ), Sao Paulo (March 16), Tokyo (March 30), Rome (April 13-14), Monaco (April 27), Berlin (May 11-12), another venue to be designated (March 25 May), Jakarta (June 8) and Portland (United States) on the 29th of that month, ending in London (July 20-21).

This council gave the green light to minor updates to the Formula 2 Sporting and Technical Regulations, and ratified both the Formula 3 World Cup Sporting and Technical Regulations as well as the proposal to delay the introduction of second generation Formula 2 cars. Ben Sulayem also thanked King Felipe VI for visiting the ‘FIA Conference Córdoba 2023’ and said he was “delighted” for holding this convention and the general assembly in Córdoba, since Spain is a “very important country to the FIA ​​family thanks to his longstanding commitment to both motorsport and mobility.”
