The quality of distribution water in the territory of the entity of Mons complies with legislation, municipal authorities indicated on Tuesday. After the revelation, in the RTBF show #Investigation, of worrying levels of PFAS in certain municipalities of Hainaut, the Mons authorities have undertaken several actions to obtain guarantees from the Walloon government and the Walloon Water Company (SWDE) .
The first observation of the analyzes shows that the concentration of PFAS in the water distributed over almost the entire territory varies between less than 1 and 15 ng/liter, i.e. a level well below the standard of 100 ng/L which will enter effective in 2026.
The municipal authorities of Mons have also specified that citizens are supplied with water via nine distribution zones linked to a certain number of wells not all located within the territory of the municipality. “According to the data available on the SWDE website, the PFAS rate in these distribution areas is well below the future 2026 standard, but for two of them, the PFAS level is not known . The areas concerned transport water mainly towards Havré-Ghislage as well as towards a small portion of the Ath road“, we can read in the press release.
The City of Mons thus took the initiative of requesting the missing data from the SWDE. “In a letter received on Wednesday, November 15, the SWDE confirms that the results of the PFAS analyzes are not yet known for the two zones but that they will be within the month“, indicated the Mons authorities. At the same time, an independent analysis from an external laboratory was ordered by the City.
