WASHINGTON DC ∙ Israel and Ukraine winning their wars is “vital to America’s national security,” President Joe Biden declared in his address to the nation from the Oval Office on Thursday night. His speech came a day following a visit to Israel in which he expressed solidarity with the country in its fight once morest Hamas and pledged more humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
Biden said that if the attack is allowed to continue, conflict and chaos will spread to other parts of the world. “Hamas and Putin represent different threats,” Biden said. Both want to completely eliminate democracy in their neighborhood. He said he would send an emergency funding request to Congress next year, expected to be regarding $100 billion. This includes money for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, humanitarian aid and border management.
Ahead of his speech, the White House said Biden spoke with Ukraine’s president to stress the US’s commitment to support Ukraine. Conservative Republicans oppose sending more weapons to Ukraine as the fight once morest Russian aggression approaches its second year. Biden’s previous request for funding, including $24 billion to help fight the next few months, was not approved, despite Zelensky’s personal plea.
Israel has been accused of killing civilians indiscriminately by cutting off essential supplies such as food, water and fuel to possible political resistance while providing military aid to Israel, which is bombing the Gaza Strip in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas.
