Ensuring Driver Safety: FIA’s Measures to Prevent Health Hazards in Racing

2023-10-10 05:10:00

In Qatar, Logan Sargent was unable to finish the race due to poor health, his teammate Alex Albon suffered heatstroke, and several riders lost consciousness at the medical center. The FIA is concerned regarding the safety of racing in hot weather and will develop a set of measures to avoid a repeat of the situation in Qatar.

“The FIA notes with concern that extreme temperatures and humidity during the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix have impacted the well-being of drivers. As elite athletes, they should not perform in conditions that might compromise their health and safety.

Responsibility for the safe operation of the machines always rests with the competitors but, as with other safety matters, the FIA will take all necessary steps to establish and communicate acceptable parameters for the conduct of the competition. The FIA has therefore begun a review of the situation in Qatar with a view to making recommendations for future situations involving extreme weather conditions.

It should be noted that although next year’s Qatar Grand Prix is scheduled to take place at a later time when temperatures are expected to be cooler, the FIA prefers to take significant action now to avoid a repeat of this scenario.

A number of measures will be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the medical commission in Paris. Measures may include recommendations for participants, research into more efficient cockpit ventilation, recommendations for changing the calendar to suit acceptable climate conditions, etc.

Research conducted in other series, such as cross-country racing in extreme climates, will be examined for use in circuit racing. This process will be facilitated by the FIA’s desire for closer cooperation between the technical, safety and medical departments under the leadership of the FIA President,” the official statement said.
