Ensuring a Safe and Ethical Environment at ComediHa! Fest-Quebec: Taking Action Against Sexual Misconduct

Sylvain Parent-Bédard says he would take immediate action, including a complaint to the police, if allegations of sexual misconduct came to his ears during the presentation of ComediHa! Fest-Quebec.

“We will not let anything pass”, assures the big boss of the Quebec comedy festival, when questioned on the measures which would be taken if artists of the programming posed inappropriate gestures or similar to those reproached to the singer of the German group Rammstein.

Till Lindemann, let us remember, is the subject of allegations of having drugged and abused female spectators whom he selected from the crowds of the group’s concerts and invited to parties in the dressing rooms.

“We have a responsibility in this regard and we do not find it funny. It has no place,” insists Sylvain Parent-Bédard.

The environment has changed

According to the latter, “the world of humor has changed for the good” since big names in the industry, including Gilbert Rozon, Julien Lacroix and Philippe Bond, were denounced in the wave of the #MeToo movement.

Without naming anyone, he indicates that artists who behaved inappropriately were no longer invited back to ComediHa! Fest-Quebec, a decision “totally assumed” and for the moment irrevocable.

His organization also adopted a code of ethics a few years ago to ensure a “healthy workplace where people feel safe” at ComediHa!.

“This code is given and explained to each member of the team, whether permanent or temporary, when they take up their duties,” points out Sylvain Parent-Bédard, who adds that the artists are also advised of the rules follow.

“When major events, TV productions or festivals are held, freelancers are notified and artists are made aware.”
