The leader of Ennahdha Rached Ghannouchi was arrested and taken to the barracks of El Aouina, following a raid carried out in his home, this evening Monday April 17, 2023, i.e. the night of the 26th to 27th day of the holy month of Ramadan.
This information was confirmed by his son-in-law and former minister Rafik Abdessalem but also by party leader Osama Ben Salem.
Mokhtar Jemai, Rached Ghannouchi’s defense lawyer, said the search of his home took place at the same time as the Maghreb prayer. He told Shems FM that the defense committee did not yet know the reason for the arrest or the purpose of the investigation once morest their client. He also confirmed that Ghannouchi was taken to an unknown destination.
The lawyer considered that the arrest of Rached Ghannouchi at the same time as the eve of the 27th day of Ramadan was a provocation, especially since his client had not missed any summons or investigation before.
Regarding reports that Ghannouchi’s arrest was due to his statement “a civil war” Mr. Jemai affirmed that the defense committee did not have any information on the reason for the arrest. He added that this statement was not an incitement, but an assessment of the political situation in the country. He added that if the reason for the arrest turns out to be the one mentioned, it would be considered an investigation for a political position.
