Enjoy Illinois 300: The Ultimate Guide to the NASCAR Cup Series Event at World Wide Technology Raceway

Find a presentation of the fifteenth event of the season in the NASCAR Cup Series, the Enjoy Illinois 300 on the World Wide Technology Raceway.

Located in Madison, Illinois, the World Wide Technology Racewy was originally a drag strip and road course. Built in 1985, it was then called the St. Louis International Raceway Park. In 1994, a new owner acquired the complex and razed the road circuit and the dragstrip in 1995 and 1996, to make way for an oval.

The oval has an egg shape similar to Darlington’s. The track is constructed so that the back straight runs parallel to Illinois Route 304, causing turns 1 and 2 to have a tighter radius than turns 3 and 4. The first two turns have similar characteristics at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, while the final two corners approach Phoenix Raceway.

Elliott Sadler won the first race of a NASCAR National Series at World Wide Technology Raceway, it was in XFINITY, June 26, 1997. The first Cup race was held last year and Joey Logano will go down as the first winner.

This weekend Illinois will reach the 100-race mark for the NASCAR National Series. The World Wide Technology Raceway hosted 38 events (one in Cup, 15 in XFINITY and 22 in Cup – editor’s note) and remains behind Chicagoland Speedway and its 57 races (19 in Cup, 24 in XFINITY and 11 in Truck – editor’s note). Cicero’s Chicago Motor Speedway (two Truck races), Willow Springs’ Santa Fe Speedway (a 1954 Cup race) and Chicago’s Soldier Field (a 1956 Cup race), complete the picture. Chicago’s urban layout will increase that number next month.
