The Brazilian Federal Police and the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) are investigating the disappearance of a Brazilian airplane pilot in Venezuela. Authorities in that country said he was last seen in the town of Caicara del Orinoco (Bolívar) on September 1.

Pedro Rodrigues Parente Neto, 37 years old, was piloting an aircraft belonging to Brazilian mining businessman Daniel Seabra de Souza, who currently resides in Venezuela, according to the Brazilian media Globo.

María Eugenia Buta, the pilot’s mother, says that the last communication with Pedro Rodrigues was on September 1.

“The last contact I had with him via WhatsApp was on Sunday, September 1. Until then, I thought he was in Bahia; because, so as not to worry me, he had not told me he was in Venezuela,” she said.

Although the pilot and the plane were in Venezuela, there is no evidence that they received permission to enter the country.

What is known about the disappearance of the pilot

Rodrigues landed the plane in Venezuela on August 17 to look for the businessman. Seabra said the pilot stayed in Venezuela for a few days, according to his account to the Brazilian media.

A document signed by Pedro states that the pilot handed the aircraft over to Daniel on August 17 in Venezuela. The document is signed by both Pedro Rodrigues and Daniel Seabra.

“On September 1, I met Pedro in the morning and he greeted me. From then on, I went about my business and I never saw Pedro again,” Seabra said.

Seabra said he had sent messages to the plane since then, but had not received a response and later learned that both he and the plane were missing.

The family suspects that the transponder, the electronic device that allows him to be tracked, was turned off.

What do the Brazilian authorities say?

Neither the Venezuelan Embassy in Brazil nor the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry have confirmed or ruled out the pilot’s presence in the country.

Brazilian authorities said the last flight plan recorded by the aircraft was dated August 17, leaving Boa Vista, Roraima, at 8:17 a.m., bound for a farm located in Amajari, a town in Roraima near the border with Venezuela.

According to the FAB, the aircraft’s signal was lost when it entered an airspace without radar coverage. The agency added that there is no evidence that the plane took off again.

“So far, there is insufficient information to enable a search using aerial means,” the institution said in statements collected by Globo.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said it is following the case through the Embassy of Brazil in Caracas. They also indicated that they are providing consular assistance to the pilot’s family and are in contact with local authorities in Venezuela.
