Abu Dhabi: The Municipality Department of Transport (DMT) has announced the launch of the Delivery Riders Hub pilot project to be implemented in Abu Dhabi in September 2023.

The initiative has been developed in collaboration with Abu Dhabi government institutions, the private sector and non-profit organisations. The chosen global destination to live, work and invest.

The new scheme aims to provide a suitable working environment for delivery motorcycle riders by allowing shaded waiting areas, comfortable seating with air-conditioning and drinking water facilities. These conditions will improve their working conditions, especially in summer.

Hamad Al Mutawa, Executive Director of Planning and Infrastructure at DMT, said the pilot project reflects the department’s commitment to enhancing the public appearance of the city of Abu Dhabi and improving the quality of life and well-being of the community in the emirate. It aims to provide a conducive and motivating work environment for delivery drivers by providing safe spaces, shaded waiting areas with comfortable seating, air conditioning and drinking water facilities. By investing in improving working conditions for bike drivers, we contribute to Abu Dhabi’s position as a great and inclusive city for all.

The initiative was initiated after conducting several interviews with delivery drivers to understand the main issues and challenges they face while working. The project is being implemented on the E25 street as it is one of the hotspots for restaurants and cafes. Designed to be easily manufactured and assembled, the new hubs can accommodate 10 to 15 individuals.

The project offers several benefits to delivery motorcyclists. It ensures the safety of drivers by providing parking spaces for their motorcycles and solves the problem of vehicles occupying footpaths, thus preventing them from paying traffic fines. Additionally, it addresses the problem of delays in food delivery, while the hubs can be used as and promotional locations to generate revenue.
