Although it is one of the basins most impacted by water stress, Oum Errabiâ has seen its level increased thanks to the recent rainfall experienced by Morocco. To support this renaissance, the Oum Errabiâ Hydraulic Basin agency announced the launch of an ambitious integrated program aimed at effectively managing drought and protecting once morest floods. This initiative aims to address extreme climatic phenomena and improve the management of these challenges in the affected regions and local authorities.
Comprising a combination of structural and non-structural measures, the main objective of this program is to strengthen resilience and sustainability in the face of growing climate challenges. A comprehensive plan for drought management will be developed in close coordination with the competent entities and water resource management organizations. Among the measures adopted, the agency plans to introduce crops requiring less water, thus contributing to a more efficient use of water resources.
The importance of groundwater as a strategic resource was highlighted, thus directing investments towards sustainable solutions to ensure water supply during dry periods. In addition, considerable efforts will be made to improve irrigation networks by separating drinking water supply canals from agricultural irrigation networks.
Regarding flood protection, both structural and non-structural measures will be implemented. Cleaning and maintenance works on watercourses and hydraulic installations will be established, as well as carrying out structural works necessary to strengthen flood protection.
In-depth studies will also be carried out to identify the areas most exposed to flooding. Furthermore, the vigilance committees will continue their work, and forecasting and alert platforms will be activated to monitor hydraulic loads.
This integrated program is expected to have a significant impact on improving the sustainability of water resources management, reducing the adverse effects of drought and floods, and promoting environmental and hydraulic sustainability. It also aims to ensure the water security of local authorities and local populations.
