Enhancing Gameplay on Consoles: A Deep Dive into Baldur’s Gate III’s DualSense Features and Controller Adaptability

Baldur’s Gate III is a deep RPG that wasn’t always easy to play on consoles. Luckily, it looks like Larian Studios have really done their job, and in a long post on the PlayStation Blog, product manager Emily Gera explains how they managed to make everything easy to use (the secret is the massive radial menu) , while also taking advantage of the DualSense controller. The latter includes a lot of things that enhance the overall experience, including the light bar, which is both cool and stated: “During a battle between mages, the light bar will take on the color of your spell—either the color of the damage type or the color of the spell.” Matches the intent of the spell you cast. During moments of high stress, its brightness intensifies, accompanied by resonant haptics. Your DualSense controller lights up in matching colors when you are affected by core states such as Paralyzed, Bleeding, or Enchanted .But there is more to being an adaptive trigger, and more is used for some extra functionality too: “We also took advantage of the controller’s adaptive trigger and added drive points and Feedback, thus providing a sense of weight to the behavior of switching between menus. Gently pulling the trigger will give you a brief peek at your radial menu — a useful feature in the heat of battle — while pressing harder than the point of resistance will lock the menu. Sounds good to us. The PlayStation 5 version of Baldur’s Gate III launched today, while the PC version arrived last month. It’s also coming to the Xbox Series S/X this fall (though without the DualSense feature for obvious reasons).
