Vigilance by the Mechelen police was reinforced around two schools following an individual allegedly accosted students.
Several students from two schools (one primary, the other secondary) located on Caputsteenstraat in Mechelen reported on Friday the presence of an individual behaving suspiciously near their establishment. He allegedly accosted students before and following the school day. The man is believed to be traveling in a white van but police have not been able to verify this information at this stage.
An investigation has been opened. Images from CCTV cameras in the area are also being analyzed in the hope of identifying a possible suspect.
The local police are asking teachers, students and parents to be “attentive to any suspicious situation” while the management of the two schools concerned sent an email to the parents of students calling on them to be extra vigilant.
A few weeks ago, a similar report was issued in Heist-op-den-Berg (Antwerp) regarding a man in a white van. The investigation will have to determine whether there is a link between the two cases.
