Against the backdrop of an increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) between 2021 and 2023, screening efforts must continue and be intensified to improve the prevention of these STIs. In response to this public health problem, the Ministry of Health and Prevention announces that from September 1, 2024, sexually transmitted infection screening will be implemented without a prescription at the request of the patient, taking into account that the following groups are 100% covered by health insurance and the rest The population is 26% and 60% (co-payments are covered by responsible supplementary health insurance).
This measure is called ” Test IS on Monday » Under the Social Security Financing Act of 2023 (LFSS), all medical biology laboratories, whether city or hospital, will deploy the technology. It complements existing systems such as Medical Prescription Screening and Free Screening at the Center for Information, Screening and Diagnostics (CeGIDD).
Screening method
When coming to the laboratory, patients who wish to benefit from screening will complete a self-questionnaire designed to identify sexually transmitted infections and the methods by which these screenings are performed. In addition to HIV, screening also includes the following infections: Chlamydia trachomatis, diplococcus gonorrhoeae, syphilis and hepatitis B.
If there are positive results for one or more sexually transmitted infections, the medical biologist will notify and refer the patient to the most appropriate healthcare professional: general practitioner, midwife, CeGIDD or hospital facility. Results reports, both positive and negative, will include sexual health prevention information.
Deployment consisting of advice and dedicated communication
This measure is based on the current recommendations of the High Authority for Health (HAS) and the following regulatory texts:
An order setting out the list of sexually transmitted infections to be screened for and the procedures for carrying out these screenings; a decree setting the age requirement for 100% health insurance coverage at under 26 years, while opening this measure to everyone.
To ensure effective implementation, all procedures with medical biologists will be available on-site [‘actionname’, ‘external_>_Renforcement_de_la_prevention_des_IST_le_depistage_a_la_demande_du_patient_et_sans_ordonnance_a>_ameli.fr’,’actionmode’, ”, ‘actionlabel’, ‘external,content,link,,custom_event’,’actionpname’, ‘component_label’, ‘actionpvalue’, ‘ameli.fr’,’actionpname’, ‘component_value’, ‘actionpvalue’, ‘ ‘component_hierarchy’, ‘actionpvalue’, ‘content’,’actionpname’, ‘heading_hierarchy’, ‘actionpvalue’, ‘>_Renforcement_de_la_prevention_des_IST_le_depistage_a_la_demande_du_patient_et_sans_ordonnance_a>_ameli.fr’])” class=”spip_out” rel=”external”>ameli.fr ;They can also access public information packs (posters, window stickers, screen videos). The information campaign, led by the National Health Insurance Fund (Cnam), will be carried out among relevant health professionals, the public and especially young people under the age of 26.
A critical step in fighting sexually transmitted infections
The system marks an important step forward in the fight against sexually transmitted infections by promoting screening and strengthening prevention efforts. This is part of a wider desire to promote sexual health for all and reduce the spread of infection by further strengthening the existing arsenal of prevention tools. However, screening forms only one of the pillars of this prevention, along with vaccination and barrier measures against MPOX viruses, and of course information and awareness campaigns, which constitute valuable allies in achieving and safe sexual health.
