Enhance Memory and Focus with Aromatherapy: The Power of Essential Oils

Breathing essential oils while sleeping stimulates a region of the brain called the uncinate fasciculus, resulting in a dramatic increase in verbal memory by 226%! This is the conclusion of a recent study carried out on around forty volunteers, aged 60 to 85. Certainly, such an experiment needs to be expanded to confirm the results. But if researchers are interested in the effects of aromatherapy on the cognitive level, it is also because in ten years, more than a hundred studies have demonstrated the interesting abilities of essential oils, particularly in olfaction, to stimulate attention, concentration and vigilance in the service of better memory. This is not so surprising, when we know that the olfactory organ is the sense closest to the brain at the spatial level. “When we smell an odor, olfactory neurons send an electrical impulse to the amygdala and hippocampus within 150 milliseconds; the information passes directly, unlike visual and auditory information which is first filtered by the thalamus. deciphers the agronomist Roland Salesse, specialist in smell. However, the amygdala and the hippocampus, essential components of the limbic system located at the back of the brain, play a central role in emotions and the consolidation of long-term memory. Besides, “the more we stimulate our olfactory receptors by breathing very different smells, the more we increase the library of our olfactory memory and its memory capacities”, underlines Isabelle Sogno Lalloz, aromatherapist and trainer.

A synergy to stay focused

Without concentration, it is difficult to mobilize our memory correctly, especially when stress, fatigue or age reduce our abilities. To remedy this, aromatherapist Françoise Couic-Marinier suggests combining the stimulating properties of cineole rosemary with lemon essence which “limits the degradation of memory” while incense “increases concentration”, and lavender allows you to better focus your mind.

To do

  • Mix in a bottle 60 g of essential oil (EO) of rosemary, 90 g of lemon EO, 30 g of frankincense EO, 30 g of lavender EO.
  • Pour 10 drops of this mixture into a diffuser…
