A spokeswoman for Dortmund police said that the police do not classify the England-Netherlands match, scheduled for Wednesday, in the semi-final of the European Football Championship “Euro 2024” as high risk.
She said: “We expect a peaceful event. There is no hostile atmosphere between the fans of the two teams. We expect a big and exciting football festival.”
However, special measures remain necessary due to the large numbers of fans, with around 80,000 Dutch fans and 25,000 English fans expected in the western German city, given that the stadium only has a capacity of 65,000 spectators.
Therefore, the fan zones at Friedensplatz in the city and Westfalenpark, near the stadium, are expected to be crowded with fans without tickets to enter the match.
There will also be a need for a police presence, especially as thousands of Dutch fans are planning to march to the stadium wearing orange, which has become one of the most iconic images of this tournament in previous rounds.
“Given the large crowd, we are deploying appropriate forces to ensure security,” the spokeswoman said.
