Johnny Alfrey, 22, from Littleborough (north Manchester, England) has been suffering from a range of symptoms – including fatigue, insomnia, vomiting and severe migraines – for over a month.
Again and once more he goes to the hospital with his mother Julie. But there his symptoms are dismissed. A month later, in June last year, the student suddenly died. Is this a case of medical malpractice?
His mother has now spoken regarding the tragedy in front of a court – and described the terrible condition of her son before his death.
Desperate Julie Alfrey told the Rochdale Coroner’s Court that her son complained of fatigue and “heaviness in the legs” when walking. Johnny’s condition then deteriorated massively. He had to throw up constantly, suffered from migraines and sleeping and eating disorders.
Both went to an emergency clinic on May 23. “He was sweaty and his lips were blue. I had to run to find someone. He was slumped in his chair and they grabbed him right away,” she says. Manchester Evening Newsquoted.
She further explained that a doctor attributed Johnny’s symptoms to alcohol withdrawal – her son was very “frustrated and upset” regarding it. Johnny only drank a beer with buddies “from time to time”. The examination also revealed an irregular heart rhythm. Given Johnny’s age, however, no one suspected anything bad.
As a result, her son was referred from hospital to hospital, but nobody wanted to take care of him. A doctor would have dismissed the symptoms as a “mental problem”. The boy would only have “anxiety attacks.” The next doctor found an “abnormal liver function”.
Despite this, Johnny was reportedly sent home. Julie in court: “He mightn’t get up. He screamed, ‘Help me mom! Help me! What is wrong with me? I’m dying!'”
Tragic: Johnny is said to have been on the mend following treatment. He ate normally and wanted to learn to play the guitar. A week later, on June 8, the situation deteriorated once more – once more he had to be hospitalized.
This time the doctors found liver failure – Johnny’s kidney function is said to have been impaired as a result. Julie Alfrey sad: “He kept saying, ‘Put me out of my misery.'”
Two weeks later, Johnny was actually saved – he died of his mysterious illness. And still there is no conclusive explanation for it.
