An asteroid has exploded over the English Channel following entering Earth’s atmosphere in the early hours of Monday morning. The one meter wide asteroid is currently known as Sar2667. It was visible from most of southern England and Wales – and even as far as the French capital of Paris.
US physicist Mark Boslough of Los Alamos National Laboratory told Wales Online that while airbursts of this size occur somewhere several times a year, they are “rarely detected in advance”. This is only the seventh time in history that such a phenomenon has been detected in advance. He added it was also the first time in history that “this has happened over a populated area with sufficient warning.” Now data would be collected and evaluated.
People across the UK captured the moment on camera and shared pictures and videos online.
