On June 14, ENGIE commissioned its largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the world at the Hazelwood site, located in the state of Victoria, in the extreme south-east of the country. ‘Australia. A significant contribution to achieving our objective of 10 GW of installed battery capacity by 2030.

Seen from the sky, the image is impressive. The battery bank is made up of 342 well-aligned modules in around thirty rows divided into three blocks. This HBESS (H for Hazelwood), of 150 MW/150 MWh, will make it possible to store the equivalent of one hour of electricity produced by the solar systems installed on the roofs of 30,000 homes in the State of Victoria.

This emblematic project fully meets our ambition to develop assets that bring flexibility to energy systems and accelerate the development of battery storage. Indeed, by storing the energy produced at times when renewable sources are most productive or when demand is lowest, batteries make it possible to accelerate the development of renewable energies by meeting the needs for balance in the face of variability. of their production. “Energy storage solutions such as batteries play a major role in accelerating the energy transition while guaranteeing the reliability of electrical networks,” says Sébastien Arbola, Deputy Managing Director in charge of Flex Gen & Retail activities.

The installation of HBESS, developed in partnership with Eku Energy and Fluence, is part of the process of rehabilitating the old coal-fired power plant, in accordance with our desire to withdraw from the production of electricity from coal (d 2025 in Europe and 2027 worldwide).
