Argentina has been coming for years leading the way in terms of green energy, it generates alternatives to the most polluting resources and is even a climate creditor in a critical context, where every action counts. However, only spasmodic good actions are not enough, there is a lack of investment. The economy and energy are drifting in a labyrinth that seems to have no way out.
The economic crisis puts every initiative at stake and, despite having the necessary human capital and natural resources, the rope is getting tighter. But today we have a differential, in a socio-political context that is permeable to a supplier like Argentina. After the Paris agreement, in 2015, a period of energy transition began, a window that urges the countries of the world to migrate towards sustainable energy in the next 50 years.
The increasing use of electrical devices, to which vehicles are also added today, together with a potential reactivation of installed industrial capacity, mean that high levels of energy consumption are increasing in today’s world.
With the aim of leaving behind the electricity supply through highly polluting energies, and thus reduce the environmental impact resulting from energy demand, the European Union included gas -along with nuclear energy- among the green taxonomies. This also implied a favorable exit for our potentiality.
LThe key is to take advantage of the large available stock of gas in Vaca Muerta as a double resource, on the one hand, it would allow supplying the Argentine energy demand, as well as generating foreign currency from the export of gas to neighboring countries and even to Europe, in order to finally get rid of the crisis. The recent inauguration of the first section of the President Néstor Kirchner Gas Pipeline (GPNK) is a sign of hope, if the successive governments assume it as a proposal that overcomes the recurrent situations.
Gas is not only the ideal instrument for the energy transition with less environmental impact, but it is the key that unlocks our way out of the crisis. However, if we do not sustain investments and infrastructure development over time so that it can be used as soon as possible, the efforts will be fruitless.
So, we are facing a world that requires energy, in the middle of a transition with a term of half a century, and we have the availability of energy and human resources capable of reaching the best world standards. This is not only a business for the country, but also for the planet, because we can generate a solution to what the international indicators are requiring for this stage.
However, there is no time to lose, the clock is ticking and the transition period has a deadline. In this context, the implementation of all the stages necessary to optimize the resources of Vaca Muerta is essential. We are less than 50 years old, then we will have definitively migrated to new sources where gas will no longer be a viable option to meet energy demand.
The time to get out of the economic lockdown is now, in a context that urgently calls for quick resolutions on energy matters. It is only necessary to prop up the action of a determining actor: the State. The State is the main investor, and just as it invested in vaccines at the most critical moment of the covid, now it must support its efforts and invest in this infrastructure, the 100% operational start of Vaca Muerta. With this initial action of the GPNK, private companies and international investors will find enthusiasm in the growth of the gas pipeline and its derivatives to supply the international demand that today suffocates the entire world.
History recognizes the State as the promoter of essential works for the development of its citizenship. And today, more than ever, it has a preponderant role in promoting the economic growth of our country.
