Energy produced by solar panels in space reaches Earth for the first time

For a first test in real conditions, the transmitters sent into space had to be light (as sending equipment into space is expensive in fuel) and flexible enough to fit inside the rocket. Result: transmitters of 50 meters by 50 meters which, once folded up, are the equivalent of one cubic meter and weigh 50 kilos each.

When unfolded, these transmitters are able to dynamically focus power to a single location using the addition of electromagnetic waves. There is almost no loss of energy between sending and receiving at a specific point on Earth (Caltech in this case for the test). In other words, issuers collect sunlight, turn it into electricity, and then convert it into microwaves.

“To our knowledge, no one has ever demonstrated wireless energy transfer in space, even with rigid and expensive structures. We do this with light and flexible structures, and with our own integrated circuits. is a first”stated Ali Hajimiri.
