Energy prices: Ursula von der Leyen wants to reform the European electricity market

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wants to provide a European response to soaring energy prices, to relieve household bills. It proposes to reform the electricity market.

Today, electricity and gas prices are linked in Europe: when gas prices soar because of the war in Ukraine, electricity prices do the same. And the European Commission is considering decoupling the two markets. “The skyrocketing electricity prices today highlight, for different reasons, the limits of the current design of our electricity market.“, declared Ursula von der Leyen who also declared working with her teams on a structural reform of the market within the EU.

A meeting between European energy ministers is scheduled for September 9 in Slovenia. Before that, in Belgium, the different levels of power are meeting in a consultation committee this Wednesday with the same objective: to find possible solutions to reduce our energy bills. Energy Minister Tinne Van Der Straeten will once once more plead for a cap on gas prices at European level.
