In September 2022, the Ministry of Mines and Energy released normative ordinance number 50/GM/MME, which defines that, as of January 1, 2024, consumers classified in Group A will be able to choose to migrate to the free market , being represented by a retailer.
In practice, this means that there will no longer be a requirement for contracted demand for the consumer unit to be able to migrate. Until December 2023, this demand for individual loads is 500 kW. From that date, it is sufficient to be connected to the supply voltage in group A (greater than 2.3 kV).
“The Brazilian electricity sector will undergo a significant transformation in 2024. Currently, around 15 thousand companies are already enjoying the benefits of the free market. According to a CCEE study, this opening has the potential to benefit 106,000 consumer units, representing an average consumption of approximately 3,654 MW”, believes Henrique Kido, Director of Market Intelligence at Tempo Energia.
The new regulation is intended to democratize energy savings for many companies, especially smaller ones, which have an average monthly energy consumption in the range of R$ 20 to R$ 120 thousand. This opening of the free market can provide opportunities for cost reduction and flexibility in energy management.
“It is an exciting moment for the electricity sector, with the prospect of expanding access to the free market and boosting the sustainable development of Brazilian companies”, celebrates Kido.
According to the Tempo Energia director, the moment is favorable, because the reservoirs of the hydroelectric plants are very high, resulting in very low future prices. “This situation makes the opening of the free market even more attractive, creating the perfect scenario for companies to take advantage of the available opportunities”.
