As the OÖNachrichten reported, Energie AG has to pay excess profits tax. “We are assuming a single-digit million amount,” said company spokeswoman Karin Strobl. The industry expects that the amount will be in the upper part of this range. Linz AG and Welser eww, on the other hand, would rule out that the tax is due for them.

For providers of fossil energy sources, income that is 20 percent above the average from 2018 to 2021 is taxed at 40 percent. When investing in renewable energies, the percentage drops to 33 percent. When it comes to electricity, 90 percent of the income that exceeds a certain upper limit – 140 euros per megawatt hour or 180 euros for investments in renewables – is skimmed off.
