The manufacturing hub, located in the state of Oklahoma, will start with 3 GW of production capacity, with plans to double that to 6 GW.

Enel North America has announced that it has selected Oklahoma as the location for its new solar cell and manufacturing facility. The facility, first announced in November 2022, will be operated through the company’s subsidiary, 3Sun USA.

The large cell and panel factory’s initial capacity is expected to be 3 GW, and Enel has declared plans to double that capacity to 6 GW at the site. The facility is expected to bring millions of dollars of investment to the state and create more than 1,500 jobs, with production expected by the end of 2024.

“We are finalizing the evaluation of the possible locations for the plant, taking into account factors such as the availability of land, the presence of skilled labor, the connections with the transport networks and the tax and incentive structures,” he told pv magazine Giovanni Bertolino, director of 3Sun USA.

The United States has become increasingly attractive to manufacturers of solar components, as the $370 billion Cut Inflation Act is rich in manufacturing incentives, including tax credits for cell production and solar panels.

Enel currently has a portfolio of wind assets in the state worth $3 billion and an office in Oklahoma City, the state capital. “We are excited regarding the possibility of expanding our presence in the state,” Enel stated.

The factory would join Qcells’ 3.3GW vertically integrated solar manufacturing facility in Georgia as one of the largest US solar manufacturing announcements to date.

“[Oklahoma está] one step away from landing one of the largest economic development agreements in our state’s history with Enel, a company that has been investing in our state for more than a decade,” said Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt.

Enel has declared that it is considering the Tulsa area to install its new facilities.
