From the aesthetics of the Kufic script and the curves of the Arabic letters, the artist Sanaz Al-Barzi formulates her artwork, and presents the story of this line in time and nowhere through her exhibition, which recently opened at the “Urbanest Gallery” in Box Park in Dubai, under the title “Endless Beauty”.
The letters flow in the paintings of the creative calligraphy, as if they were waterfalls of colors mixed with gold, formulating the movement of the planets and the sun, and drawing the forms of the beginnings of life and love in a contemporary style.
The artist’s works in the exhibition, which runs until June 21, carry her to a world fraught with beginnings. She draws through the letters “birth”, “the beginning of life”, “the birth of the sun” and “the moon”. She uses the Kufic script and formulates it according to geometric shapes related to architecture and interior design, and this is evident in the text written in a synthetic style in the painting.
Contemporary classic mix
Artist Sanaz Al-Barzi told Emirates Today: “Although this is my first solo exhibition in Dubai, I have previously presented a series of workshops and participated in group exhibitions, in addition to my participation in Expo 2020 Dubai.”
She added: «My work belongs to a large group of paintings written in Kufic, which took me five years, and combines the classical as well as the contemporary form, and includes types of this ancient calligraphy, including Levantine Kufic, Cyrene Kufic, and Mushafic Kufic».
She pointed out that among the exhibited works is the surah of the Qur’an that dates back to the beautiful calligraphy project for the first part of the Qur’an (the Istanbul Qur’an) in the initial Kufic script, and Levantine Kufic, which was implemented under the guidance of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
She pointed out that she is presenting in this exhibition copies of the basic work of the part that she presented during this project, as each of the 80 artists who participated in the project had to write some surahs of the Holy Qur’an, and the entire Qur’an will be displayed in a museum in Istanbul, explaining that the project took nearly Seven years, and divided into nine sections, and each section displays a kind of lines throughout history.
Cosmic symbols
Sanaz Al-Burzi embodies the meanings that she wants to burden the painting with through compositions and colors, so she removes circles and squares from her works, so we find her embodying the planets at times, and expressing the state of circumambulation around the Kaaba at other times.
The Kufic script is presented in contemporary and innovative patterns, so the texts appear as if they are in a rotating movement flowing from the hidden world to this world, as the sun shines as if it fills the earth with light, and the moon scatters its light through the canvas according to compositions that depend on repetition.
The paintings of Iranian calligraphy carry many cosmic symbols, as they tend to embody the planets and concepts of life, and the letters flow in circular motions as if they are in a state of rotation, as they draw the beginning of life and birth and the beginning of love and birds.
The paintings that celebrate Kufic calligraphy combine the eastern and western patterns in the repetition movements through which the painting is built, which highlights the creative influence of the forms of modern art, as it moves from steadiness to photography through the accelerated movements of the letters.
Sanaz believed that her study of graphics made her draw letters in a different way, as the paintings she presented gained a lot from this art.
She noted that she seeks to highlight the female side in what she presents, as it focuses on Islamic architecture in the works presented, so there are symbols that express Islamic art, the most prominent of which is the Holy Kaaba in the work titled “Tawaf”.
As for the texts that she chooses in the paintings, she mentioned that she is working on choosing them according to the topic that she expresses, as the texts are faithful to the state of the work and the colors also follow it.
