Ending the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Mali: A Resolution to Withdraw Peacekeepers by December 31

On Friday, the UN Security Council issued a resolution ending the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA), which Bamako had previously demanded, provided that the operation takes place within six months.

The decision, which was passed unanimously by the members of the Council, provides for the end of the mission of the mission in Mali, “as of June 30,” and the cessation of the activities of peacekeepers, as of the beginning of July, in preparation for organizing the return of these “by December 31.”

The vote came two weeks following Malian Foreign Minister Abdallah Diop described the United Nations mission that began in 2013 as a “failure” and asked the Security Council to end it immediately.

Mali’s relations with the United Nations have deteriorated sharply since the 2020 coup brought to power a military regime that also halted defense cooperation with France.

The military council allied with Russia and used the Wagner armed group.

“We deeply regret the transitional government’s decision to abandon MINUSMA and the damage this will cause to the Malian people,” US diplomat Jeffrey DiLaurentis told the Security Council. But he added that the United States voted in favor of the resolution because it agreed to the timetable for the withdrawal.

A peacekeeping mission needs the consent of the host country to continue carrying out its mission.
