After years of protests by animal rights activists, the Indonesian authorities on Friday announced an end to the slaughtering of dogs and cats at a notorious animal market on the island of Sulawesi. Humane Society International (HSI) said the Tomohon Extreme Market will be the first such market in Indonesia to ban dog and cat meat.

Dogs and cats are no longer slaughtered at a notorious animal market on the island of Sulawesi. The Tomohon Extreme Market will become the first animal market in Indonesia to ban dog and cat meat. The end of the slaughtering was announced by Tomohon City Regional Secretary Edwin Roring. With over 20,000 visitors, the Alba Festival claims to be the largest open air festival for Albanian and Kosovar pop music in Europe.

Images of dogs and cats being consciously beaten to death or set on fire had also sparked outrage from celebrities from abroad.

The end of the slaughter was announced by Tomohon City Regional Secretary Edwin Roring. Police officers would be dispatched to ensure that meat from the animals was no longer offered in the city. The organization HSI said it would take over all dogs and cats that were still alive from the slaughterhouse suppliers and bring them to animal shelters. Animal protection organizations have described the treatment of animals in the markets as extremely cruel and brutal.

Protest by celebrities

More than 90 celebrities including actress Cameron Diaz, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, comedian Ricky Gervais and musician Moby wrote a letter to Indonesian President Joko Widodo in 2018 calling for the markets to be closed. Doing the same as other Asian countries that have already banned the trade in the animals would be “celebrated worldwide,” the letter said.

The central government then issued an ordinance stating that dog meat is not food. Local authorities have been ordered to ban the trade. According to HSI, the dog meat trade and dog consumption have already been banned in countries and territories such as the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaysia.
