He was arrested by officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police around 1:30 p.m. in the Saint-Quentin area.

He had been wanted since Wednesday for illegal release.

The fugitive took advantage of an authorized exit from the detention center where he is being held to break conditions. He then left the road in Saint-Ulric, before fleeing on foot.

The police had asked for the public’s help in locating him.

The searches were initially concentrated in the Saint-Ulric and Matane sectors, in the Bas-Saint-Laurent.

Finally, the perimeter had been extended since the authorities suspected that Jérôme-Vincent Vaillancourt had gone to New Brunswick.

The 40-year-old is a long-time criminal with around 20 crimes to his credit, including several thefts spread over around 25 years.

In 2019, he was convicted of fraud, receiving a one-year prison sentence.

He was also charged with theft of a vehicle and dangerous driving in 2014. His first crimes date back to the late 90s.
