Bovine tuberculosis is a zoonotic disease, it causes significant economic losses in livestock farming and can represent a professional risk for breeders, veterinarians, slaughterhouse staff or hunters. It mainly affects cattle, as well as goats in Spain.
The disease is caused by bacteria Mycobacterium bovis et Mycobacterium goats. Certain wild animals, such as wild boar, can also become infected and transmit the bacteria to livestock. The project has thus made it possible to develop new biosafety and diagnostic tools and potential vaccines for goats. The communication strategy with farmers has also been improved to strengthen tuberculosis control activities. The work was particularly focused on the Pyrenees, where the disease is very present.
The project was co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Interreg VA Spain-France-Andorra Program (POCTEFA 2014-2020).
